Kickstarting 2025: Catch Up on the Latest EarthRanger Mobile Updates

Catching you up on all the work we’ve done to enhance the EarthRanger Mobile app.

Introduction

The latest updates to EarthRanger Mobile (version 2.8) bring new and exciting capabilities to your fingertips. Because it was the holidays (and who doesn’t want more gifts?!?!), we’ve incorporated some of the big upgrades from our previous version in this quick article. As with all of our ongoing work on the platform, these specific updates aim to enhance your decision-making to better protect wildlife. What’s New?

EarthRanger Mobile now displays all user-created events as icons on the map, color-coded by priority, allowing for a clearer view of ongoing activities in the field.

In response to your feedback, EarthRanger Mobile users can now view all the Events they create when viewing the map. Displayed as icons and each color-coded by priority, this update offers instant visual clarity about the urgency and importance of each situation. Tapping on an Event icon, such as an injured animal report, opens the event form with key details already filled in, making it easier for you to assess and respond. As a reminder, when creating new Events in EarthRanger Mobile, corresponding icons are automatically placed on the map based on your GPS coordinates, providing a precise location of current activities in the field. Soon, all Events will appear on EarthRanger Mobile’s map view, regardless of who created them. We expect to release this in the next few weeks so those in the field have a truly comprehensive view of everything going on the ground.

Subject tracks now automatically update in near real-time, helping users track movement and direction while also viewing location history for the past three days.

Subject tracks, introduced in our last release, are another essential feature worth revisiting given the holidays. When you open the app, tap on a Subject, and its tracks will appear, allowing you to visualize the movement and direction of animals, personnel, or vehicles in near real-time. Tracks update automatically and can be refreshed anytime by tapping the Sync button in the Status section while the app is open. You can also view movement history from the past three days, giving you a clearer picture of the Subject’s activity. For even more detail, select a track to reveal past locations and timestamps, helping you better understand movement patterns.

The newly introduced "Go To" button helps users navigate to a subject’s last known location with real-time directional guidance and distance tracking.

With pilots specifically in mind, last month, we also released the Go-To button to improve navigation in the app. Say you have an immobility alert triggered while you or your pilot is in the air; you can tap on the Subject and press the “Go To” button to quickly orient yourself toward a Subject. This feature displays a bearing angle, directional compass, distance, and a directional line navigating you toward the rhino that may need immediate attention. All of these features update dynamically as your plane or helicopter moves closer, helping to guide you directly to the Subject’s location. Another one that came out during the holiday season, this feature stands out for its ability to save time and streamline operations.
